Why the best Formula 1 drivers are more likely to crash?

If the future F1 world champion is going to crash, there is a good chance that he will take his direct competitor with him. The analysis of race data from 1970 to 2014 supports that drivers close in skill level—i.e. those with a similar number of wins and status—were most likely to collide. Interestingly, this phenomenon only happens when the weather is good, suggesting that drivers’ attentional focus tends to decrease when all indicators are on the green.
